The AMEO project is co-financed by the European Union, the Réunion Region and the French Office for Biodiversity. Europe is committed to Réunion with the INTERREG VI Indian Ocean fund.
The INTERREG programme is the main tool for regional cooperation in the Indian Ocean. It is co-financed by the European Union and the Réunion Region.
Since 2000, the Réunion Region has been the managing authority for the INTERREG programme. This program allows La Réunion to forge ties with its partners in the area, within a co-development approach, in order to address global challenges such as the environment and climate, health, and research development. the economy, training and professional integration of young people, as well as the enhancement of our cultural heritage.
The French Biodiversity Office (OFB) is a public institution created in 2020 to meet the challenge of protecting and restoring biodiversity in France and its overseas territories. Under the dual supervision of the ministries responsible for the environment and agriculture, it carries out five key missions: environmental policing, knowledge and expertise, support for public policies, management and restoration of protected areas, and mobilization of stakeholders and citizens.
Our partners
The European regional cooperation programme “INTERREG VI Indian Ocean” aims to promote cooperation between European regions and with their neighbors for the development of common solutions in the fields of urban development, rural and coastal, economic development and environmental management.
In this spirit, in each collaborating region of the project, a regional partner is chosen to assist at least in the development and implementation of the project. It can also contribute financially to the project or in material form, for example by providing premises.
The IOC is an intergovernmental organization that brings together five member states: the Union of the Comoros, France (under La Réunion), Madagascar, Mauritius and the Seychelles. It leads a diversified cooperation in favor of the sustainable development of Indianocéanie in the fields of integrated management of marine and coastal ecosystems, sustainable fishing, environmental education, health, governance, maritime safety, agroecology, culture, among others. In this sense, it is driving regional cooperation in the Indian Ocean.
Created in April 2023, the ARB is a public institution led by the Réunion Region, in partnership with the Department, the State, and the French Biodiversity Office. Its mission is to strengthen knowledge, protection and enhancement of the natural heritage of Réunion, in a logic of territorial cooperation. ARB Réunion centralizes and structures biodiversity data, coordinates local biodiversity policies, supports territorial projects, leads the network of biodiversity stakeholders and promotes citizen participation.
The University Center of Mohéli is a higher education and research institution of the University of the Comoros. It provides professional training in educational sciences, agronomy and management and economic and social administration. It has a research structure called the Mohéli living laboratory, a transdisciplinary research laboratory that, for greater social and ecological justice, seeks to co-construct social and ecological innovations related to the conservation and enhancement of the marine and terrestrial environment in Mohéli.
The Ministry of Education of Seychelles has been a privileged partner of IRD in Seychelles for many years, as it was its regional partner within the framework of the PAREO project (the reef heritage of the Indian Ocean in our hands), of which AMEO is the continuation. In addition, the approach proposed in AMEO is in line with the interest of the Ministry for the development of additional educational materials dedicated to coral reefs in order to address new issues such as sustainable use of the environment or climate change.
The MCB is the oldest and largest banking institution in Mauritius. For many years, it has supported projects related to the protection of the environment and in particular coral reefs. It works for this in close collaboration with local associations. The AMEO project allows him to continue his actions in this direction and to make them shine among the other islands of the Indian Ocean.
